In 1991, esteemed Dunedin Heart Surgeon Dick Bunton planted a modest 3Ha Pinot Noir hobby block at Lake Hayes near Arrowtown, driven by his passion for Burgundy and the belief in Central Otago’s potential for world-class Pinot Noir. Over the ensuing three decades, Rockburn expanded with an additional 40ha of estate vineyards in Gibbston and Pisa/Lowburn sub-regions. The winery, situated in the Cromwell foothills, is where Winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis meticulously crafts wines that embody a pure expression of Central Otago. Rockburn’s journey reflects a commitment to quality and the region’s emergence onto the global wine stage.
